New Year's Resolutions

Okay I normally don't make resolutions, but this year I am going to.  2010 was a big year for me and I know that I have a lot to face in 2011.  So here goes nothing:

1.  Run at least six races.
2.  Break a 30 minute 5k time.
3.  Do not get injured again this year.  Continue to work on my hip and its recovery.
4.  Meditate at least three times a week.  I'm still learning and working on this one!
5. Find balance between my work and personal life.
6.  Continue to work on those relationships that are meaningful to me.  Tell those around me I love them and how important they are.

Finally, please be safe this New Year's Eve!

Strategy Pants by MPG Sports

When I opened these pants up out of the packaging I was concerned.  They looked TINY.  I am a size 4-6, small and these pants were labeled small.  I slipped them on, with no trouble at all.  Before I go into how great these pants are for a run, I need to discuss what they look like.

I usually don’t go for slim fit pants or body hugging.  My hips aren’t my favorite body part if you know what I mean.  Well I don’t really have an explanation except that the fabric on these does just the right amount of holding and hugging, but I would happily wear these pants out to the store.  (As a matter of fact they are in the washing machine now and will get worn on a road trip I’m taking tomorrow.)

The pants are soft…I really have never had such soft workout wear.  They have a pocket on the side hip, perfect for a key or a gel.  They also have zippers on the back of the legs that allow you to cool off when you want, and to customize the fit.

Although they are not specifically a thermal pair of pants, they kept me warm on a 20-degree run.  They are indeed quick drying and moisture wicking.  Again, the price is reasonable.  These are on sale right now for $46.40.

Stay Warm This Winter with Sonnic 2 by MPG

Sonnic 2 Top

This thermal top is by far the softest I have ever put on.  It is soft and fleecy on the inside and smooth on the outside, thus giving you warm and slightly wind resistant at the same time. The beautiful blue color is unusual and eye catching. Again, this is a piece of workout gear that you’d be happy to stop for milk after while wearing.

I wore this top on a very cold day while I ran.  I loved the quarter zip on this top.  It kept me warm while I was cold and then I could unzip just enough when I got warmed up. (And when its all zipped up the zipper doesn’t scratch your chin.)  I also loved the thumbholes.  I had gloves on so I pulled them on over my gloves and they fit just fine.  I loved the fact that the arms didn’t ride up while I ran.  This top has reflective strips.  I would comfortably wear it on a road run.  It also has (my favorite) a zippered pocket on the arm.  I love that I can carry a key or a gel on my run, easily and comfortably.

This top is a great buy for the money.  Tops like it by Nike or Lululemon go for $80 or more.    (It’s currently on sale for $48).   My very favorite thing about this top is how SOFT it is.  That seems to be a trend for MPG’s clothes…

I would love to wear this top around the house just as much as I’d love to wear it for a run.

MPG Tops

Proxy 2 Top

This tank is black and very fitted.  Usually when I try on a fitted top like this I don’t like the way I look in it.  However, this one had designs on the front that hugged in just the right spots for it to be flattering.  The top had a built in sports bra which fit perfectly.  Sometimes the bras in these tops are either too big or too small.  The top was easy to get on and once I had it on the thing that struck me the most was how soft it was.  Workout clothes are not known for being the softest most comfortable clothes but I could easily wear this tank under a sweater or cardigan and 1.  It would be comfy and 2.  It would look cute.

I ran in the tank underneath a thermal top layer.  It rode up a little but I think that was due to the pouch I wearing on my waist to carry my cell phone and keys.  By the end of the run everything was still in place and the top was still comfy.  There was no chafing, and the top was still soft.  Its wicking properties kept my very dry.  When I arrived home, I didn’t want to change right away, I was that comfortable.  I would wear this tank under something all winter and alone in the summer.  While they have lots of colors, I love the black for its flattering appearance and for its versatility.

Lightening Top

I wore this top underneath a thermal top on my run today.  Again, it was so easy to put on and so soft.  The bra fit perfectly, and the top was really cute.  I love the contrast colors.  The top is really cute.  I would wear this on its own in the warmer months.  I’d pair it with a running skirt and very comfortably stop and run errands after going for a run.

The top was very comfy to run in.  It didn’t move or shift.  It rode up a little but again, I had on my phone pouch.  The bra was comfortable and sturdy enough for running.  The seams didn’t pinch and there was no chaffing.  The top has a zippered pocket in the back.  It’s just enough to hold a key.

During the winter, finding a pocket is no problem for me. However, in the summer, in small shorts and tanks, a pocket is hard to come by. I was thrilled to see the pocket in this tank.

Reflections

Christmas Eve is always a time of reflection for me.  This year has brought a lot of changes, good and bad in my life.  However, it has been a monumental year for me.  I have learned more and grown more than I feel I ever have before.  As the year progressed I felt like I was able to shed layers of myself.  I was able to "find my muchness".  It took a lot of pain and anguish for this to happen.

I have leaned to become more present.  I feel as if so many times we go through life in a haze.  We are so busy that we can't think straight.  We are busy preoccupied that we forget to tell those around us we love them.  How many times do you look back and you can't quickly remember what you had for lunch yesterday because you were in such a rush eating it?

I know that our jobs and lives are busier than ever, however, I also know that this makes our relationships that much more important.  At this time of year, it is even more important to take a step back and enjoy some time with your friends and family.

This Christmas Eve think back on your year and look into your heart.  Remember who brings you joy, remember what's important to you.  Reach out and tell someone you love them.  Reach out and say you are sorry for something that occurred this year.  Reach out and tell the person next to you how much they mean to you.  I have changed my whole perspective this year.  Through injury, relationships ending and a new career path starting, there have been a lot of tears and laughs...and every one of them has taught me something.  I'm ready for 2011 and all is will bring with it.

However, before then, I have some serious Christmas celebrating to do!
Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night!

Zensah means ahhh

When I first saw that Zensah made a running bra I was a little curious about how they would fit and feel.  Zensah makes compression wear, which usually means very tight.

I tried out the Zensah bra this morning on my run.  Usually my sports bras are terrible to get on...tight and difficult.  (And I'm not large chested.)  The Zensah bra slipped on very easily.  Once it was on, I didn't feel the usually pinch that my normal bra had.  I was interested in if it would feel supportive and as comfortable during my run.  It did.  I didn't have any pinching or rubbing while I ran.  The bra was supportive yet comfortable.

The bra was so comfortable that I ended up wearing it most of the day.  Usually I'm dying to get out of my sports bra the minute I walk in the door.  The bra was just as easy to take off as it was to put on.

The fabric of the bra is wicking and its SOFT.  I have a lot of Nike bras and even some ones from Lululemon.  However, I now only want to wear my Zensah bra and I'm hoping to purchase some more in the near future.

Zensah bras are not any more expensive than sports bras by other brands and they come in a variety of colors.  I received the baby blue, but I know I'm going to want some of the other colors too.

Take a peek at the photo of the bra I received and a photo of the bra on a model.

I will be reviewing more Zensah products at a later time.

Lock Laces

I have seen all sorts of lacing styles and laces.  You can see a few dozen styles when you head to a race.  I always tied my shoes using the "runners knot" and its worked pretty well.  However, when I first saw Lock Laces I was curious.  I was sent a pair and I put them on my road running shoes.  I was nervous about if they would loosen, if they would hold my shoes on my feet and if my shoes would be as comfortable.

I had nothing to worry about!  I took them out for a run this morning and did speed work.  They held perfectly!  My shoes were snug, but not tight.  Putting the shoes on to head out was quick and easy and made getting out the door a little bit faster.  In my morning fog I didn't have to get my laces just right.  When I got home, the shoes slipped right off and the laces didn't loosen at all.

I'm a big proponent of anything that saves time and energy and these laces do both.  I intend to put these on my casual sneakers and my trail shoes.

These laces are great for racers, triathletes, etc.  However, I think they will be most appreciated by the busy mom trying to squeeze in a workout.  I also know that they are great for kids who can't their shoes yet.  Special needs children and adults can also benefit from using these laces.

One of the best things about Lock Laces is that they are a feel good company.  They give back to the community, they are green and contract with a non-profit that provides job training for adults with developmental delays to assemble Lock Laces in the USA.  You can feel great about buying from them.

Their laces come in all sorts of colors.  You can get them in your child's favorite color, or to match your shoes.  Oh and for something like this you'd expect to pay a lot of money.  However, these are just $4.99+ shipping online and are available at select Foot Locker stores nationwide.

Visit their website to take a peek at the laces and the great work they are doing:

Chi Running

Everyone wants a little help in order to get running.  Its a common New Years Resolution to get moving, get fit and stay fit.  Well Chi Running is here to help.  The program is designed how to help you take the pain and injury (and work) out of running and give you the tools you need to ENJOY it!

Chi Running was designed by Danny Dreyer and he and his wife have books and DVDs on the topics of Chi Running and Chi Walking.  This summer I read Chi Running and I followed its instructions.  Although I felt awkward at first, I soon found my natural running posture and I was off.  All of a sudden I wasn't sore after my workouts.  I was ENJOYING running.  Instead of feeling
beat up after a run, I felt BETTER.  Who doesn't want that?

I've struggled with my asthma my whole life.  Its always hard for me to "forget about my breathing" and I envied those who could run for miles and not feel like they were dying.  By engaging the Chi Running principles, I was able to run without the feeling of being smothered.  I was able to breathe and I was thrilled.

I will admit, I over ran and I was injured this summer.  It was my own fault.  When I went to my physical therapist, he brought Chi Running back to my attention.  The principles he spoke to me about were those in Chi Running.  I reread the book and I was off and running (no pun intended) again.

I was recently sent the Chi Running DVD and I'm in love all over again.  The DVD is the perfect starting point.  If you don't have the time or patience to read a book, this is a a wonderful use of an hour's time.  The DVD goes over the principles of Chi Running, then takes you into lessons to teach you the principles.  Each lesson is clearly stated and taught by discussing the principle, then getting into the mechanics of it, then reviewing the principle. There are visual displays during each lesson.

While the book was awesome, I love the DVD and I think that
its a wonderful compliment to the book.  Reading the book and then
watching the DVD solidifies the principles, gives you a visual and is fun to watch.  For someone like me who has read the book multiple times, the DVD is a great refresher.

If you are looking for a great starting point to start a workout routine, start with Chi Running or Chi Walking.  If you are looking to give someone you love a little inspiration, this is a great gift.

Chi Running uses the principles of Tai Chi.  Its about finding your balance, your strength and tapping into your inner energy.  Until I started with Chi Running, I was ignorant to the positive effects of becoming aware and present.

Give Chi Running and I promise you will enjoy running even more than you do now.  If you're a beginner, you are going to want to hit the roads before the DVD is even over!

Winter in New England

One of the problems are running in New England in the winter is all the laundry it creates.  In the summer, I have a pair of shorts, a tank and some socks to wash after every run...
Now I have at least one pair of pants, sometimes two, a tank, a long sleeve top and a fleece top, hats, gloves, and socks....it all adds up.

I'm doing laundry every two days now in order to keep up and since it all can't be dried, my office looks like this most of the time.

I'm not complaining.  I love my running clothes and I love running, however, its funny to walk by this room in the middle of the night...all the racks and clothes look like haggard ghosts.
It also makes me grateful for spring and summer when a lot of clothes aren't necessary.  Laundry during those months is going to seem like a breeze!

Christmas Surprise

Today I received a present from one of the sweetest families I have ever met.  And I love the present...but its what it represents means more.  There are beautiful people out there in the world and you just have to keep your mind and eyes open for them.  You never know where you will meet them and how they will become a part of your life.  This holiday season, tell those you love how you feel about them.  Surprise someone.  Bring a little joy to someone who isn't expecting it.  That's what the holidays are all about.

Sale Gear

I will admit, I love my running clothes.  I'd live in them all the time if it were acceptable.  So I love finding a great deal on running clothes.  They are usually so pricey and finding a sale can be tough.  I recently had to get rid of some tanks, layering pieces and sports bras because they were just "too loved".  So while I believe that technical gear is worth every penny, I do also believe that you can grab some great deals if you pay attention to when and where to shop.

My first tip is to sign up for some online mailing lists.  Often stores will send you discount codes or free shipping codes.  Pick carefully as you don't want to fill up your in box!  I receive email updates from Dick's Sporting goods so I know when my favorite brands are on sale.

Shop at stores that ship for free.  Some even have free returns as well.  Some of my favorites are Zappos.com and RunningWarehouse.com

Visit outlet stores.  Lots of athletic brands have their own outlet stores now...just to name a few, Under Armour, Nike and North Face.  Take a peek at the clearance rack at these stores.  (On my most recent trip to a Nike store I visited the clearance rack and found this gem for $6.) Before you visit an outlet store make sure you know what you are looking for and make sure you know how much it costs.  Some outlets have items made specifically for them and these options are not much cheaper than the retail versions.

Shop at the end of the season for the best deals.  At the end of winter, the winter running clothes will be on sale, likewise spring/summer clothes.  Often some colors or sizes will be on sale while others are not. Browse so you can get the best deals.

If there is an item in your running wardrobe that you love, but its expensive, Google it.  Chances are you may find it online less expensive than you can find it in the stores.

So while it takes the most time, getting the best bargains means browsing online and in stores.  However, eventually you will find a few go to brands that you love to run in and to wear.

Stocking Stuffers

My husband and I do a stocking stuffer for each of the 12 days of Christmas (the commercial 12 days not the religious 12 days.)  The past few days he's given me some gifts to prove that he is indeed the world's sweetest husband,

The first one is here:

Its an ornament he made on Cafe Press.  Each year we get an ornament (or a few) that signify something that happened that year.  My husband had his first paid photography gig so I got him a camera ornament.  I looked for a running ornament but it was shockingly hard to find one.  So I gave up....but clearly this one is MUCH better than anything I would have found.

The second stocking stuffer is here:

Its a shadow box with my race numbers.

I'm not fast, I am not a fierce competitor....but I love running.  My husband supports me in this and that means the world to me.

Safety First

Well I'm not sure if its because I'm getting older and wiser or I'm just over thinking things, but lately I've been really concerned with safety while I'm running.  So I figured I'd go over a few of the things I use while I run and hope to hear some of your ideas in return.

I always thread a whistle onto my iPod headphones.  That way I can grab it quickly if I need to.  I use one of the bright orange ones.  I figure that maybe it would be seen and someone might avoid me all together.
Secondly I carry my phone.  This has been a challenge as I have a Droid X, which is one of the large phones out there.  Recently I found the iFitness pouch (see separate review) and it fits my phone perfectly.

I wear it around my waist in the front.  I figure that getting my phone out of it from the front would be easier than the back in case of emergency.

The next item is not legal in every area so check with your local police, but if I'm in the woods, I carry pepper spray that fits around my hand.  It wasn't expensive and again I hope I never have to use it.  I think that sometimes things like this will deter someone from attacking you.  They will go for the person without the pepper spray.  If you are going to carry something like this, make sure you are comfortable opening it and using it!
I also have Road IDs on both sets of my running shoes.  They look silly, but if nothing else they bring me peace of mind.  The company also offers bracelets, flashers and all sorts of other safety equipment.

Finally, I think the biggest things you can do to protect yourself don't have to do with gear.  Run in places you know and feel safe.  Run with a partner and don't run after dark.  Make eye contact with those you pass and make sure you can hear what is going on around you.  Finally, make sure someone knows where you are and when you should be back.

Run Safe!

Christmas Wish List

Well its that time of year again and everyone is looking for "the perfect gift".  Since I'm a professional organizer, the whole gift giving process freaks me out a little.  After all, we all have too much stuff in our homes already, and we're going to make a big production of giving each other MORE stuff?  However, I can get behind the idea of giving each other gifts we'd love to receive and get.  Now, that's where this all gets tricky, as everyone's idea of the perfect gift is a little different.   And so I'm here to give you a few ideas for the runner in your life, the person looking to get organized, and a combination of both (who CAN"T use a little more free time to workout and enjoy themselves?)

1.  The first gift on my list is spices.  I love Penzeys spices.  They can be ordered online or you can visit one of their stores.  Their spices are fresh and tasty.  I live giving them as gifts because they are consumable, everyone uses spices and they can really help a cook create fresh healthy family meals.
Check them out here:
http://www.penzeys.com/

2.  Banana Blossom Press  They offer a range of cards and tees for all types of athletes.  Their slogans are cute, their tee shirts are stylish and COMFY.  Any runner or yogi would love to get one of these as a present!  http://www.bananablossompress.com/

3. My next item is something I've very recently fallen in love with.  My husband has had one for years and I've always teased him about it.  Its the Garmin Forerunner 305.  It tracks calories, distance, pace and a lot of other vital items.  This can really help you get, and stay motivated.  Once upon a time they were quite expensive, but have since come down considerably.  Here is a link to one at Amazon.com
http://www.amazon.com/Garmin-Forerunner-Receiver-Monitor-Bilingual/dp/B000E3XPYQ

4.  My next gift idea is also from Amazon.com.  Its the Kindle.  Nothing cuts down on clutter more than the ability to buy and read books digitally.  I love reading and often am involved in a fiction book, non fiction book and text book all at the same time.  The Kindle allows me to read all three without the bulk. And when I'm done with a book, I don't have to find a place on the book shelf for it!
http://www.amazon.com/Kindle-Amazons-Original-Wireless-generation/dp/B000FI73MA

5.  If you live in a colder climate winter brings with it the need to bundle up in what are usually unattractive clothes.  Well Bondi Band changes that.  Their pony tail and pig tail hats are functional, warm AND adorable!  I recently wore one at a race and got a lot of compliments!  Check them out here:
http://www.bondiband.com/

6.  Buying for the woman who loves shoes?  Try Sanuk this year.  They are cute, comfy and worth every penny.  They come in lots of colors and varieties too!  My favorites are the "I'm Game" series.  In season animal prints with none of the guilt!  Check them out here:
http://www.sanuk.com/

7.  We all have to drink water.  And most of us don't do it enough.  One of the excuses I use a lot os that the water bottles are too much of a pain to carry all day.  Platypus has fixed that.  Their water bottles weigh next to nothing and when you've done with them, they roll up and can fit into your purse, pocket, you name it.
8.  I'm sure Apple doesn't need any plugging from me, but I converted from a larger running iPod this past summer to a Shuffle.  I love it.  Its light weight, easy to carry and the controllable headphones make muting my music and changing between songs a breeze, even in the middle of a race.  I love iPods for everyone as a gift.  Load it with music before you give it and its an even more thoughtful present.
http://www.apple.com/ipodshuffle/

9.  Everyone loves to travel.  So give someone you love the gift of a weekend away.  Plan the weekend out with a hotel stay and at least one planned meal.  It doesn't have to be fancy, just fun.  I rarely take time off and when I do, I usually micromanage the plans.  I'd love to have a weekend away planned out for me!  Even if its the next town over, leaving home and work can be a big relief and recharger.

10.  My last item is my best friend and worst enemy.  Its the foam roller.  These come in all sorts of color and sizes, so you can pick one that's right for you.  Mine is seen below and although it looks cute, its evil.  It hurts like heck to use, but you feel so good after its worth it.  Mine got me through a pretty bad injury this past summer.  Through using this roller I was able to avoid surgery.  They are great for anyone who works out, yogis, runners, gym rats....And, as a bonus, they are fun to watch others use.

Happy Shopping!

Peekaboos!

I was sent a hat from Peekaboos.  When it arrived it was wrapped in cute tissue paper with a magnet and some cards.  Once I got it open, I was even more attracted to the hat.  It was soft and cute.  I knew right away it was going to be comfortable.

When I put it on I was even more in love.  Its form fitting, but not tight.  The part of the hat that fits around your forehead has a soft fleece lining on it, making it even softer and comfier.

And the best part is the ponytail hole!  I have long hair and often when I am out for the day, walking around the city, my hair is down right unruly.  This time, I pulled it back through the ponytail hole and it stayed there all day.  The nice thing was when I went inside and took the hat off, I didn't have that usual nasty case of hat hair.

I love the hat and the design.  I'm not in love with the color but they have 18 to chose from so you can find the one that's right for you!  Take a peek at the photo of me wearing the hat in NYC on Thanksgiving Eve.

It takes a lot for a hat to be warm AND comfortable all day in NYC and this one fit the bill.  As they say, if it can make it in NYC, it can make it anywhere.

Fuel Belt Discount!!!

Friends and Running

I'm an entrepreneur.  I am self employed and many of my days are worked from home, in the quiet and without a water cooler and co-workers to chat with.  That sounds heavenly for many of you I'm sure, but I will tell you, while I don't miss anything about working in Corporate America, I do miss the people.
And so I'm always looking for something fun to do with other self employed people.

A lot has changed in my life this year.  I've grown and changed, like we all do.  Some of the relationships in my life that we very important to me at the start of the year, are no longer part of my life at all.  And I do feel this is a good time of year to assess who is a part of your life, why they are and if the relationship is still healthy.  This can be true of people, things, and jobs.  Is what you have around you making your life better, every day?

While we all have bad days, we generally have a good idea of who and what brings us joy and who and what makes us unhappy, stressed out, angry or sad.  Sometimes the answers aren't easy.  I had to walk away from some relationships this year.  I once considered these people some of my best friends, but when I took a step back I realized that I was doing all the work in these relationships, I was doing all of the giving and getting nothing in return.  So I walked away, and while it hurt at first, it was better in the long run.

So why am I telling you all of this?  Because I was able to find the strength to get rid of these toxic relationships through running.  I was able to find myself in my trail runs this summer.  I have made new friends through running.  I have become part of a community.  I'm not fast or competitive, but I love running and I've been able to connect to others who do as well.  And because of this, my life has been made better.

Banana Blossom Press

When I first heard about Banana Blossom Press I was skeptical.  Someone told me about their cute wares and I thought that I'd have to see for myself.  After all, cute slogans on tee shirts are a dime a dozen these days.  Well I am in love.

Banana Blossom Press sent me their No Run=Cranky and Moody tee.  For anyone who knows me personally, this is completely true. That's what makes this so funny and cute.

When the tee arrived I was thrilled to see it was American Apparel. Their tees are cut for a woman and are very flattering.  The best part about them is they are SOFT!   I put this tee on at about seven am this morning and its now almost midnight.  And its comfy and I could even wear it to bed if I so chose.  The color is flattering and the writing on it isn't sticky like some tee shirt companies are.

Although I'm in love with this tee and will be getting some as gifts, I am also in love with their line of cards geared towards yogis, runners and everyone who loves getting out there and playing hard.  Cards are for any occasion but are specific to sports.  You can even get a card for ITBand Syndrome!  I hurt mine this summer and would have loved a card from someone understanding what I was going through!

Their prices are very reasonable, currently the tee sells for $20.  Visit their website here to see their complete selection of tees and cards:

I know I will be placing an order!

Hair Streamer

Because I have SO much free time on my hands (anyone who knows me knows this is a ridiculous statement), I've decided to try to find some fun ways to make running a little cuter.  Today I made myself this hair streamer.  I'm not sure how it will work yet, but it was quick and easy to make and obviously, with different ribbon can be made in a variety of ways, colors and patterns.

Caffeinated Popcorn!

When I first heard about caffeinated popcorn I didn't know that to think.  I was sent a sample and I was almost afraid to try it....I am not a big caffeine person and I was afraid of what it would do....

So tonight curiosity got the best of me and I tried it.  I don't know how to put this except simply, its amazing.
Its sweet, salty, crunchy, and buttery all at the same time.  There is no taste to the caffeine.

I hike a lot and this would be the PERFECT hiking companion.  After hiking for a while its nice to have something sweet and crunchy and if it gives you energy for the hike back down, that's even better.

Bio Fuel is available in "regular" and "extra caffeine" and they even have a kids "decaf" version.
You can buy it on their website here:
http://www.biofuelfoods.com/

Its inexpensive, especially when compared to other specialty hiking and outdoor foods.  Its so yummy, its addicting!  You are going to want more!

I'm Game

Okay anyone who knows me knows that I love shoes.  While I don't feel like I have a lot, I get teased by friends and family about all of my footwear.  In particular, the quantity of my flip flops.  I do love them.  They are cute, easy and comfy.

When I heard about Sanuks and their motto that they "are not shoes" they are actually sandals in disguise, I was very curious.  Sanuk sent me a pair of their women's shoes, the "I'm Game" model.

First of all when they arrived, they did so in a biodegradable bag.  Who doesn't love that environmentalism?  Instead of having to recycle a bulky shoe box this bag can be used to dispose of kitchen waste and then just thrown into the trash.  I use a juicer and I'm going to use it to line the waste tank.

The shows also come on this cool hanger.  It allows you to hang the shoes in your closet!  How cool is that?  I actually hung the shoes on my coat rack by the door until I was ready to wear them.

Okay, now on to the shoes.  I will admit I was skeptical that they would be comfy all day and they would provide me with the support I need as I'm recovering from a hip injury.  Well I left the house feeling like I was floating on little pillows of air.  I spent the rest of the day not thinking about my shoes.  For me, that's big.  I am notoriously uncomfortable after wearing a pair of shoes for a while.  I wore the shoes with jeans and with socks.  I'm pretty sure you could go sock less in these and still be comfy.  I would also wear these with shorts in the summer.

I love the comfort level that these offer!  They are cute and comfy, which is a rarity in shoes these days.  They also offer the ability to "throw them on and go", something I think is so important for busy people, including moms on the go.

Of course, they sell men's and kid's versions too.  They also sell sandals.
Check out their website for their seemingly endless and ever changing selection:
http://www.sanuk.com/im-game

And, are you ready for the best part?  The sidewalk surfers, which the I'm Game is a part of, are mostly around $50!  So you get a great shoe, that's comfy, for a great price.  I dare you to try and beat that.

Pony and Pig Tail Headbands

I had previously reviewed the headband by Bondi Band and loved it so I had high hopes for the pony and pig tail hat.  When I first felt the hat, I thought it was thin and wouldn't keep me warm.  Well I was wrong.  It was just the right thickness to keep me warm throughout my run.  I was even surprised by a sudden snowstorm during my run and it kept me warm and dry.

The dryness is the best feature of this hat.  While keeping me warm, the hat stayed dry and kept me dry.  When I took it off, my hair wasn't a sloppy, sweaty mess as it is when I've used fleece hats, etc.

When I first put the hat on I was concerned about how it was going to be to pull my ponytail or pigtails through it.  Well it was easy as pie.  I just made my ponytail, put the hat on and it nearly pulled itself through.

Bondi Band's hats come in all sorts of patterns, colors and with adorable and motivational slogans on them.  The best part is they are only $20.00.  By the time I was home from my run, the hat was dry and I would have happily worn it again before washing.  Despite, this, I suggest you get yourself a few!

Nathan Quick Draw Water Bottle

If I could have made a list of everything I wanted in a running water bottle and given it to a company to make, they would have come back to me with the results it would be the Quick Draw Plus bottle by Nathan.

The bottle itself is 22 ounces...not too little and not too much.  I think its enough water to sustain you through your activity, but not too much that the bottle becomes heavy.

The attachment around the bottle that allows you to hold it on your hand slips right off when pulled so you can put the bottle in the dishwasher easily.  I've had others in the past that are impossible to wash except by hand and who has time for that?

Let me next address the hand grip.  It is large enough that you can COMFORTABLY put your whole hand in.  I even carried it this morning with mittens on and it stayed on with no adjustment throughout the run.  The hand hold does also have the ability to be adjusted smaller or larger, because let's face it our hands aren't all the same size.  The adjustable strap is also reflective, great for road running.

The other side of the bottle has a small pocket designed to hold a small ID or your key.  The zipper is large enough so that you can put a car key in it that is large (like mine) and there is even a small hook to which you can attach your key.  However, I will tell you that the zipper didn't budget and I don't think the key would fall out.  The bottle is even equipped with a small ID and medical information section.  You can fill this out and never have to remember to take your information with you on your next run.

While running with the bottle, it stayed put.  I didn't have to adjust it and it was comfortable.  Those are all complaints I'd had after using other bottles. And although this may seem small, the nipple on the top has a ridge in it.  Its perfect for opening and closing the bottle with your teeth should you not want to stop your run to drink.
I'm not only going to use this bottle to hydrate while I run, but I think it will make the perfect hiking companion. I also intend to throw one into my work bag.  This easy to use bottle will take away my excuses to "hydrate" throughout the day :)

The bottle retails for only $18 and is worth every penny.  You can take a peek at it and get one here:

This color is part of their 2011 product line and will be available online in January 2011.  Who doesn't love a cute AND stylish water bottle?!  Take a peek at the picture here:

New Tutu

I love my pink tutu.  It came from Target and while I will always have it, I wanted some variety.  Not being close to Halloween anymore I needed to get creative.  Through the wonders of Etsy, I found someone to make me one for $10!  I've been meaning to post a photo so here it is!  I will surely be getting more as time goes on!

Membership

This is an essay I wrote this past April.  I never did anything with it and although life is a little different now, I figured I'd share.

My membership card had been revoked. Every month when my Runners World arrived it was painstakingly clear I was no longer part of the club….of runners.

I used to run, in high school and then I started again a few years ago.  Although I loved owning the cutest running clothes and knowing who was favored to win the next marathon, I was never very good at running.

I would read about short runs, long distance runs and speed work and wonder how I could manage all this, when I was focused on making it through the first mile.

Just as I was making progress (or so I felt), I got mono.  And as the doctor said “its just not so easy at your age”.  For the first time in my life I was be faced with the realization that I was no longer “just out of college” and I could “push through it”.

We all know how the story goes, weeks became months and months became two years.  Every month my magazine would arrive and bring with it a reminder of the potential I was not reaching.  It would also taunt me a little, showing me a glimpse into a club of which I was no longer apart, runners.  People who went out and punished themselves day after day in the pursuit of happiness and being a better runner.

Sure I still worked out.  I hiked and used the ellipse and spin bike I have in my living room, but it was never the same.

So one day, when the snow was still on the ground here in New England, my shoes started calling me.  I’m not sure what made me think of running, or more importantly, what possessed me to strap on my shoes, some thermal pants and leave my heated car seats for the trail.  Once I started running the story was typical.  I panted, stopped running and almost cried.  But at the same time I woke up something inside of myself.

I felt that although I wasn’t a runner in anyone else’s eyes, I’d become on again in my own.  When my next magazine arrived, it wasn’t scolding or a painful reminder; it was a welcome back hug.

As time had gone on, I’ve improved.  I’m not running a marathon or breaking speed records.  I’m a busy, small business owner who desperately tries to carve out thirty minutes to head into the woods to run.  This makes me a runner.  We all use a lot of subjective adjectives to describe ourselves, runner is one of mine.

I don’t have abs or buns of steel and I’m not training for a race.  Everyday and every run is a batter of woman versus herself.  My mind still races when I put on my shoes and gear up my iPod.

The moral of this story isn’t mine alone.  The moral of this story is that we are all runners.  No matter how fast are or how far we can go.  We face our own challenges each and every time we head out for a run.  Whether it’s a marathon or a mile, we all have the same spirit, determination and possibly, craziness that gives us all membership to the same club.

Turkey Trot

I had my second race on Thanksgiving day. It was a Turkey Trot.  I was very nervous.  I had only raced once before as an adult (on Halloween of this year).  As it was my first race I had a PR on Halloween.  I was coming back from injury so I was pleased with just about anything I did.  Finishing thrilled me.

And so I felt the pressure was on for this race.  I was worried I wouldn’t beat my last time.  I was worried the colder weather would make my asthma act up.  I was worried that I would be tired from holiday activities.

Well it was colder and I was very tired from going into NYC the night before the race to see the Macy’s balloons inflated.  I had a horrible meal and I barely slept the night before.

I showed up at the race and figured I’d do my best and if it was a PR or I came in DFL, who cared, I was awake in in running shoes while most of the town slept in their warm beds.

Well I beat my last PR by almost 3 minutes!  I was thrilled!  Again, I don’t remember a lot of the race. I don’t remember being out of breath.  I don’t remember feeling like I was running any faster than I do in my training runs.  I just remember running, enjoying being with “my people” and loving the fact that I was blessed to participate in an event like that on Thanksgiving morning.

I love racing.  I feel like when I attend a race I’m with “my people”.  I love the excitement.  I love the fact that to each and every person running or walking, the event is a challenge and together we are all going to do the best we can and find victory in our own way.

Since my first race was on Halloween, I wore a tutu as my costume.  Well I’ve decided that its my thing.  Its my race skirt.  I wore the tutu today with a matching pigtail hat.  (My pigtails come out the side of the hat.)  I love the fact that lots of people complimented me on it.  I love the fact that running is fun and even the fastest runners can be silly and support others.  So for this Thanksgiving I’m thankful for so much, my friends and family, my health, the love I have in my life and for the sport of running.  I’ve posted some photos of me at the race today as well.

Happy Thanksgivining!

Its not a typo, its my "thing" to spell it like that.  And every year it reminds me that something that is mortifying at the time can teach you some great life lessons (and provide great story telling) later on.

May you be close to those you love this holiday and find peace, joy and happiness.

Enjoy your holiday and all is has to offer.

Injury

Lots of people run, and lots of people call themselves a RUNNER.  However, for many of us, we feel like there is an elite club to which we don't belong.

When I ran my first race since high school, I stopped and looked around and thought "there are my people", I had found my home.  But that's not when I thought of myself as a runner for the first time.
It wasn't when I bought my first shoes or anything like that.  It was when I got injured.

When I become hurt so badly that I couldn't run, I know it was part of me.  I longed to get out and struggle against myself, huff and puff and feel like I was going to die.  I longed to slip into my unflattering running tights and muddy shoes.  I knew at that moment that I need to run.

And the next two months would teach me so much about myself.  I had to find a new outlet to express myself, a new outlet to deal with my emotions and a new outlet to break a sweat.  Thankfully, I was surrounded by people who were supportive of my recovery and I found the best physical therapist.  His name was Steve and he knew about "people like me" who go crazy without working out and quickly designed a program for me to follow that would allow me to feel better mentally, and continue to allow my injury to heal.

Now that I'm on my way to a full recovery I look back and I'm so thankful the injury occurred.  I learned patience.  I learned how strong I was to deal with this.  I learned how much those around me love me and support me.  I learned that physical therapy is harder than any run I will ever go on.

Now I'm a stronger runner because my workouts are more diverse.  I've learned that taking days off are a part of training, not a break from it.  And I now know that unless something drastically changes, I will run the rest of my life.

For all of these things, I'm thankful.

This made me laugh!

Stress

Well I've had some crazy things happen recently.  And let's just say I don't do well with stress.  And so I have been sleeping poorly, and things have just been a bit off.  Personally, professionally, things have just been a bit too much over the past few weeks.  And today something changed.  I don't want to say I gave up or that I don't care any more because that's not true.  However, I think maybe something just "gave out" and I can't put forth the effort required to be extremely stressed out anymore.

I woke up this morning and was exhausted.  I dragged myself into my running shorts. Its a balmy 6o degrees here in CT today, VERY unusual for this time of year.  I drove to my park and started my watch.  Well then I just ran.  And didn't think about anything except the running.  I don't know what songs played on my ipod or the colors of the houses I passed, I just know that while I was running I somehow managed to outrun the issues that have been following me.

I don't run fast so they must be really out of shape!

I am wondering what's next for me in life.  I am considering a change of career direction, in order to protect myself from recent events happening again.  I don't know what the future holds and I can only plan so much.  However, I know that whatever the next few weeks bring my way, running will be there to help me deal with it.

Perfect Pouch

I've been running steadily again for about a year now.  During that time I've been adjusting a lot of things....by wardrobe, shoes, socks and what I carry with me when I run.  I run alone and often in areas that my husband would rather I not run in alone, like the woods.  And so, its been required that I carry a cell phone.  I started by trying to use the pockets in my running clothes....that didn't work...my car has one of those large keys that isn't easy to fit into things and my Blackberry couldn't fit into any pocket.
So to solve these issues, I bought a mesh pouch.  While it held what I need it to, it moved around, required a lot of fidgeting from me and although it was light weight, it allowed moisture into the pouch.  So although I could carry my cell phone, it was going to be wet from sweat by the end of my run.  Gross.

Now that fall is upon us I've gone back to putting things in the pockets of my running clothes...my windbreaker particularly.  That works well expect my very heavy and very large phone (Droid X) bangs against one wide of me the whole time I'm running.

So when I came across iFitness I was cautiously optimistic.  I was sent the single neoprene pouch (grey with pink zip).  I tried it out today.  I spent a little time when I first started running getting it to that spot where it doesn't bounce.  Once I did that, I didn't even know I had it on for the rest of my run.  I put my Droid and my car key in it and zipped it with no problem at all.  When I was done running and took it off, I took my phone out expecting the usual grossness.  However, it was dry!  I put the pouch aside and drove home.  By the time I stopped for a latte and drove home the pouch itself was dry!  No more airing things out for a night before I can use them again!

So, not only is this pouch comfortable, it makes running and carrying your possessions easy and they stay clean!  I'm getting these for some running friends I have so that everyone can carry their phones while they run!

They also have other sizes (even bigger ones) and LOTS of colors!!

Race Nerves

When I used to race in high school I was always nervous.  Often so nervous I'd throw up BEFORE I ran.
Well I had my first race a few weeks ago and I was surprisingly calm.  I have my next race this Thursday and I'm already nervous!

I'm not sure what's different this time, but I keep thinking about my family members at the end, the hill at the start, the possible, rain, etc.

I need to get a lot of sleep between now and then and I have a lot of work to do, which will hopefully distract me.  But that being said, I'm going to have to learn a way to beat the race jitters as they will end my racing "career" before it even gets off the ground.

Hydration

We all know how important is it to our well being to be drinking lots of water.  And over the past few years the media and retail have really picked up on the non disposable water bottle craze.  And I will admit I have LOTS of water bottles.  Its against everything I tell my customers, I don't get rid of one when I  get a new one.  I do love them and use them all.  However, I am still in search of the perfect bottle.  I have plastic ones, metal ones in all shapes, sizes and designs.

When I first saw the Platypus water bottle I couldn't get my mind around it.  How did it stand up?  How did you drink from it?

I was sent two bottles, one larger (.5 liter) with a screw on cap and a 17 oz with a Hyper Flow cap (think sippy cup).  Well they rocked my world.  The bottles are SUPER light when they are empty.  When they are full, they are easy to hold and drink from  The Hyper Flow cap made drinking water while driving very easy.  And it doesn't leak if you drop the bottle!  The cap locks from underneath so if you will be stashing the bottle in a purse or bag, you can make sure that the cap is not accidentally pressed and all of the water leaks out.

When you are done drinking all the water, the bottle rolls up and fits in your purse!  I love that!  Normally, after a long day I am picking up all the metal and plastic water bottles from my car, work bag etc...and carrying them all upstairs.  This is the best solution for a long day, lots of water and NOT hauling around a ton of bottles to do it.  They are 80% lighter than regular water bottles and they are BPA,PVC and Phthalate (all the bad stuff you've heard about the media) free.

These bottles are available in various sizes and colors.  (who doesn't love a pink water bottle?)   This bottle takes away every excuse you have for not packing and drinking water during the day.  Get one.  Now.
Take a peek at their selection and find a store near you that sells them!

Perfect Headband

I have LONG and THICK hair.  This is not a great combination for a runner.  I spend a lot of time before, during and after my runs dealing with my hair...getting it up to run, keeping it up during my run and then trying to get it back down and out of whatever contraption I'm using that day to hold it up to get it washed.

I was recently sent some products by Bondi Band.  I received them and at first glance they weren't anything super special.  (I received plain colors.)  I wore the headband out today and before I even arrived at my run, I had forgotten I had it on.  Now let me back track for a minute and tell you I've tried all sorts of headband...thick ones, thin ones, sticky ones, rubber ones, you name it.  If they hold my hair in place, they hurt and if they don't hurt, they don't stay in place.

So this headband is comfortable, we established that.  AND it held my hair in place for my 5k this morning.  I will admit I kept putting my hand to me head to adjust it because that is habit for me.  But every time I did, I realized that it was just where I'd left it.  Normally when I make it back to my car, I rip my headband out...I left this one on the whole time I stopped and ordered a latte and after I got home for about an hour.

Its cute enough that I want to get this head band in some other colors to wear to work at client's houses.  And one of my favorite features is that it can be worn flat for a bigger headband or scrunched up for a smaller one.  Okay, one of the best parts of this headband is the price.  Its only $8!  They come in all sorts of colors and patterns....check them out today!

Not Running

Well for the first time in a LONG time, I am happy not running.  I've taken a few days off due to a crazy, hectic schedule, being exhausted and fighting the world's most persistent cold.  And although I'm usually a mental person when I'm not running, I'm happy, resting, and learning to deal with not being able to fit running into my life for a few days.  This is huge people.  Huge.

That being said, I have a nice long run planned for this weekend and lots of new routes printed out to try.  Oh and two new races on the calendar to train for.  And I spent part of this afternoon working on a very special costume to wear to a New Year's race...its a penguin!  See the attached photo...its the pieces that will become a penguin costume...My husband thought I was crazy when I asked to go tot he craft store yesterday to get felt and googly eyes.

However, NOT running has taken away my emotional outlet...the time I give myself to think about things and make decisions.  So I feel a little frantic and emotional.  Thing that I can usually compartmentalize aren't so easy to address without running.  And so, I have my clothes laid out for tomorrow morning, for a quick run before the start of another busy day.

Cross Training

Its funny how as we get older, our tastes and preferences change.  I used to hate cardio and love weights...now its the opposite.

I can't stand cross training.  I love running.  Giving up a day of running to cross train is painful, upsetting and well, just boring.  But as my recent injury has taught me, cross training is necessary.

And so, I am now using those days that I used to have to skip my runs to cross train.  This morning, I was so exhausted I could barely walk to the bathroom, never mind head out for a run.  However, the prospect of heading down the stairs to the mini gym in my living room was feasible.  I didn't have to bundle up, remember my ipod and gloves, or warm up the car.  I was able to get to "the gym" workout and be done in less than 30 minutes.  So while the activity in between still isn't my favorite, I'm learning to look on the positive side of things and find that cross training just might be my savior.

I also intend to cross train on days its miserably cold or rainy outside.  Not only am I adding in weights to my running workout schedule, I'm focusing on yoga again.  I have an awesome yoga video that I love and I set up my mat in the middle of the living room.  Not only will it improve my balance and flexibility, I'm hoping it will improve my focus and peace of mind.

I will write more later about meditation and how its changed my life since my injury.

Lost in the Woods

Okay today I ran a trail that I hadn't been on since this summer.  Its a very rocky and hilly cross country trail and although its fairly short in length, its challenging.  Well it was so covered with leaves that the rocks were hidden.  I almost tripped twice.  I slipped once.  Despite all of this I decided to continue on the trial even after having the opportunity to get off the trail at the halfway point.  Big mistake.

I kept running all of a sudden my surroundings didn't look familiar anymore.  I realized that I was in the middle of the woods, with no trail markers anywhere in sight.  Now I did have my cell phone and my whistle with me and I'm confident I could have cut through the woods  and found my way back, but there isn't much as disconcerting to a run as being lost.  I backtracked, found the blazes and then high tailed it off the trail....and I won't be back until there are leaves on the trees again.

However, being on this trail really made me think.  I remembered the last time I was on it..and what was going through my head then.  Although this was just a few months ago, everything was different.  Its hard to believe so much has changed in my life in just a few months, but it has.  I've opened another branch to my business, entered my final year of grad school, walked away from some relationships, developed some others.....and really worked on finding happiness.  It sounds corny, but a lot can change is just a short amount of time.  And if I've learned anything its to expect the unexpected and despite the best laid plans you can never tell where you will be in just a few months.

Running Skirts

Okay I'm not a new convert to the running skirt.  I've actually been wearing them for years....since before it was easy to find them and the only ones available were bulky and poorly designed.  Boy have they come a long way.

I will formally review this product in more depth at a later time on my business blog, but I feel as if I had to mention it now.

I was sent the Camo Running Skirt by Running Skirts (http://www.runningskirts.com/).  When I first held it up to myself it looked downright tiny....I was a little nervous to try it on.  I did however, and found it fit perfectly.  The waistband is soft and forgiving and very flattering.

The pattern is so cute that my husband even commented on how cute the skirt is.

So when I ran this am it was below freezing.  I wore the skirt over tights and it was so cute and comfy I didn't want to take it off after my workout.  While I usually wear skirts with small bike shorts underneath, this skirt has "bloomers" or built in panties.  I may be a little concerned about my modesty in the warmer months, but unlike the traditional bike shorts, the panties didn't ride up or pinch.  I didn't have to fidget with it once.

My other favorite part was the side pockets that velcro shut. Skirts normally have pockets that MIGHT hold a key during a whole run.  My key stayed in the pocket the whole run with no movement and no worry.  Once again, making this skirt easy and effortless to wear.

I am going to be buying more skirts from Running Skirts!  They have all sorts of patterns, colors, sizes and even theme skirts.  When ordering, be careful...I was sent a size three that the tag states is the equivalent of a size eight in women's pants.  I usually wear a four or six, but this skirt fit perfectly.

Thanks Running Skirts for the best discovery I've made in running gear in a while!
